Beginner:
When you first start out and you are hired as a junior web designer you most likely be working in a small office team fixing links and correcting typos on websites. The first few months can be rather boring, but you have the great opportunity to learn from others, ask lots of questions and make mistakes.
Small office environments are usually really fun, everyone looks out for each other and although your work may be less then entertaining it is important. As the "newbie" you will have less freedom then the more experienced designers, ensure you get to work on time, prove your worth and you will move up the ladder quickly.

Senior/Experienced Designer:
Working for a design firm as the senior designer comes with a major perk... you can delegate work to others! You can now pass on any mundane tasks to others so you can focus on what you are really good at. With this position comes more responsibility, you're the head of your department, it's up to you to keep the customers happy and the work consistent. The work environment will be more relaxed for you once you reach this level, you will be confident in your skills and abilities. Take regular holidays and negotiate your pay based on the amount of responsibility.
How much will you earn?
On average: $40,000 - $60,000+ /year
Freelance:
As a freelance website designer you can work any where in the world, you have the freedom to mould your work around your lifestyle, rather than trying to fit your life in around work. A laptop and an internet connection is all you need to get your work done, with discipline and regular clients you can work from a hotel room as you travel the world.
It is my opinion that having a few years company experience makes a freelancer that much better than jumping straight into freelancing. The skills and methods you are exposed to through working for a company are invaluable.

For most freelancers they choose the lifestyle they can live over the money.
Business Owner:
While you are establishing your business it will take up almost of your time and demand a lot of attention. Once established and you have long-term, well trained staff you will start to regain some of your freedom to live the lifestyle you choose.
How much will you earn?
You set your salary, the larger your company and staff numbers the more annual
turnover you can achieve.
